Under the patronage of the Qing court (1644–1911) operatic performances filled the “Forbidden City,” giving birth to what is known as Peking (or Beijing) Opera. The form was most notable for its restrained use of props and backdrops, which served to highlight the actors’ exaggerated gestures, movements, makeup and costumes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the early days of Peking Opera, all roles were played by men, even the female characters (known as “Dan” roles). Costumes were used to reflect the identity and personality of the characters and were often used as a replacement for props. It came to be known as the “national theatre” of China by the 20th century before experiencing a sharp decline following the Boxer Rebellion at the turn of the century. The Rebellion saw the capitol’s great theatres burned to the ground, and opera, which had been the main form of entertainment for both urban and rural residents, took a back seat during the ensuing years of political and cultural upheaval.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the 21st century, there were only 162 identifiable forms of Chinese opera left on the country’s intangible cultural heritage list, down from more than 350 in 1957. For this Duomo di Milano release, we looked to a series of architectural drawings proposed by Paolo Cesa Bianchi (1840–1920) for the decoration of the interior vaults. In 1881, Cesa Bianchi was named the engineer-architect of the Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, a position he held until 1912. This submission by Cesa Bianchi centres around the use of arabesques, which create a sense of a faux relief arborescence over a golden background. The upward facing arrangement symbolizes a closeness to heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe proposals of architects like Cesa Bianchi are now carefully preserved in the Archive of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, an organization that has been safeguarding and restoring the Duomo di Milano since 1387. Thanks to their work preserving the history of the cathedral, we can discover the unfinished works and inspirations of architects both past and present, and imagine the various versions of the cathedral that were never completed. And so, despite their seemingly limited source of inspiration, Jane Austen’s novels (like Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma) continue to be placed among readers’ all-time favourite book lists because of their superb insights into the dynamics of society and human interaction. Persuasion, the novel featured on this cover, is among her lesser-known works but it benefits from the writer’s more mature outlook as it was composed toward the end of her life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn in Hampshire, England, Jane was the second youngest of eight children. According to the custom of the day, her formal education consisted largely of such subjects as needlework, dancing, and music. However, she had access to two large libraries, those of her rector father and a family friend, and her family was always supportive of her intention to succeed as a professional writer. Her novels found readers within her lifetime and she even counted among her admirers George IV, the Prince Regent and eventual King of England!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn most of Austen’s stories we encounter a young female, blessed with natural grace and dignity, yet in danger of compromising herself by yielding to the pressure of social expectations. By contrast, Persuasion, her last novel, centres on a heroine who succumbed to the stifling effects of society and whose perspective on life shows signs of resignation uncharacteristic of Austen’s protagonists. Eventually though, the young woman does come into her own and finds a match with a virtuous man. Thus, there is a conciliatory closing to the story, much the kind that we are accustomed to in Austen’s books.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is comparatively little information about Austen’s life, as her family sanitized the details of her biography after her passing. However, a large number of her literary manuscripts have survived to this day. The handwritten page reproduced on the cover of our journal is a part of the only known manuscript of Persuasion. It comes from a draft of Chapter 11 that was abandoned in favour of the version that eventually went into print. As a reject, this manuscript stayed in the family until 1925, at which point the guardianship went to the British Library.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJane Austen’s Persuasion (1818) is the author’s most biting and ironic work. And perhaps no character encapsulates what it means to be an appealing anti-hero more than Gil Blas, the star of Alain-René Lesage’s picaresque novel by the same name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePicaresque novels blend elements of comedy and satire in their depictions of a lovable charlatan. Published in the early 1700s, Gil Blas has been described by Edgar Allan Poe as being among “the finest narratives in the world” and was a key item on Thomas Jefferson’s reading list. And though it has come to define the genre, Lesage’s work itself was influenced by the story Lazarillo de Tormes, a novella published anonymously in 1554. This Spanish work is what gives us the term “picaresque,” stemming from picaresca, meaning “rascal,” and it established the key features of a “picaro” character – a lower-class person surviving by their own wits in what is seen as a corrupt or unjust society.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese two foundational works of the picaresque genre were published together in 1846, and our cover design recreates that publication’s binding. Hobson to a small group of English bookbinders during the “Golden Age of English Bookbinding.” They were known for featuring pointillé outlines rather than floral volutes, which were much more widely used during the era. Modern research indicates that the Queens’ Binder was in fact four distinct shops, and even individual binders such as “A” could refer to multiple artisans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile the name or names of the binder called “A” is not known, at least one of the artists is thought to be William Nott, an important figure in the book trade who operated as a bookseller, stationer and publisher. The quality of the bindings attributed to A also vary considerably, but there is no question as to the excellence of this specific piece. The Government of the Tongue was an important work during its day and, as provost of Eton College, Allestree would have been able to demand the highest quality for his publication.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday, the original binding is a part of the Henry Davis gift at the British Library.
