It comes from the Edo period (1615–1868) when Noh theatre, known for the sumptuousness of its costumes, was at its height.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNoh theatre is one of the world’s oldest performing arts and has been handed down through generations of Japanese composers and performers. The plots draw from legend, history and contemporary events and are structured around song and dance. Though the thematic tone is often poetic yet monotonous, the costumes are anything but. In fact, Noh is often referred to as “mask drama” due to the importance placed on masks and costumes within the form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe term karaori, for which this design is named, refers specifically to the exquisitely embroidered traditional woman’s kimono like the one reproduced here. Karaori are regarded as some of the most beautiful theatrical costumes in the world, thanks in part to the Japanese aristocracy’s embrace of the theatre style – as both viewers and performers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough Noh is a Japanese art, karaori means “Chinese weave,” as the fabric has its roots in China. And like the costume reproduced in our Peking Opera Embroidery series, this too would have been crafted for a male performer playing a female role. Both the material itself and the pattern shown would have helped tell the story of the character. In this case, the stiff brocade technique created a thick, glossed fabric that would not drape easily – this was used to create an angular effect evoking the spirit of a noblewoman. The flowering grasses depicted served to emphasize the woman’s femininity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy the Meiji period (1868–1912) Noh had reached such heights that it was introduced overseas, influencing artists far and wide. William Butler Yeats, for example, wrote an essay on Noh in 1916 that he titled “Certain Noble Plays of Japan.” And even more contemporarily, David Byrne of the Talking Heads discovered Noh while touring Japan and, according to American music critic Josh Kun, was inspired by the highly stylized, stiff costumes to “design the oversize business suit that became a visual staple of Talking Heads live shows.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday there are more than 70 Noh theatres throughout Japan and it has been deigned an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This beautiful example of karaori costuming can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the Otto C. Deering gift. As a textile designer, he developed an original style that charmed his contemporaries and has since become a point of reference for all those interested in design and decoration. His creative approach was characterized by his pronounced views on what constitutes beauty and a firm belief in the essential value of art and handicraft. The Arts and Crafts movement, inspired by the ideals of Morris and the social theorist John Ruskin, had as much of an anti-industrial ideological component as it did an aesthetic teaching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStudying Classics at Oxford University, Morris developed an interest in the history, social values and art of the Middle Ages. His appreciation of the medieval theme found its way into his designs, with patterns often replicating the “millefleurs” style of the 15th and 16th centuries. Characterized by an abundance of small decorative flowers and plants used to fill the background space, this style is most closely associated with the tapestry-making traditions of France and Belgium.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMorris was also an influential writer and staunch social activist and was aghast at the effect that industrialization was having on human productivity. New methods of production eroded the value of individual skill and a sense of accomplishment that came with the process of handiwork. He perceived medieval crafts guilds to be an ideal arrangement, where everyone contributed according to their own skill, and art and creation were a lived experience for both craftsmen and consumers. When he founded an interior design business together with a few like-minded associates, it followed the guild model and relied on traditional labour-intensive methods of production.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUltimately, Morris believed that traditional crafts ensured higher-quality products, and so he made his furnishings using traditional weaving and the old technique of hand woodblock printing. Using Douglas Cockerell’s classic text \u003cem\u003eBookbinding and the Care of Books\u003c\/em\u003e as her guide, she taught herself the craft of bookbinding, producing her first binding in 1906. Pye began with simple white or natural pigskin leather before graduating to coloured goatskin leather inlay panels, like the one reproduced here. By 1934 she was creating complex covers of many different coloured inlays, and her work was regularly exhibited throughout England and around the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular design, reminiscent of a tawny lion’s face and using masculine colours of red, black, green and brown evoking a rich leather study (or den), was designed to hold a collection of William Wordsworth’s poems. It tells of a spoiled princess who reluctantly befriends a frog who, unbeknownst to her, is actually a prince under a sorcerer’s spell. In the original tale, the curse is lifted when the princess throws the frog against a brick wall in anger, but in later years the Brothers Grimm sanitized the story, turning it into the version we know today. This classic tale was considered by the brothers to be the oldest and most beautiful of the stories they collected in German-speaking regions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Brothers Grimm set standards for research and analysis of stories and legends that made them pioneers in the field of folklore in the 19th century. During this time their collection of tales maintained its status as second only to the Bible as the most popular book in Germany. And so, despite their seemingly limited source of inspiration, \u003cem\u003eJane Austen’s\u003c\/em\u003e novels (like \u003cem\u003ePride and Prejudice\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eSense and Sensibility\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cem\u003eEmma\u003c\/em\u003e) continue to be placed among readers’ all-time favourite book lists because of their superb insights into the dynamics of society and human interaction. \u003cem\u003ePersuasion\u003c\/em\u003e, the novel featured on this cover, is among her lesser-known works but it benefits from the writer’s more mature outlook as it was composed toward the end of her life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn in Hampshire, England, Jane was the second youngest of eight children. According to the custom of the day, her formal education consisted largely of such subjects as needlework, dancing, and music. However, she had access to two large libraries, those of her rector father and a family friend, and her family was always supportive of her intention to succeed as a professional writer. Her novels found readers within her lifetime and she even counted among her admirers George IV, the Prince Regent and eventual King of England!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn most of Austen’s stories we encounter a young female, blessed with natural grace and dignity, yet in danger of compromising herself by yielding to the pressure of social expectations. By contrast, \u003cem\u003ePersuasion\u003c\/em\u003e, her last novel, centres on a heroine who succumbed to the stifling effects of society and whose perspective on life shows signs of resignation uncharacteristic of Austen’s protagonists. Eventually though, the young woman does come into her own and finds a match with a virtuous man. Thus, there is a conciliatory closing to the story, much the kind that we are accustomed to in Austen’s books.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is comparatively little information about Austen’s life, as her family sanitized the details of her biography after her passing. However, a large number of her literary manuscripts have survived to this day. The handwritten page reproduced on the cover of our journal is a part of the only known manuscript of \u003cem\u003ePersuasion\u003c\/em\u003e. It comes from a draft of Chapter 11 that was abandoned in favour of the version that eventually went into print.
