One might have the expectation that with the arrival of the modern age and mass production, the art of book binding would have become obsolete. However our Poetry in Bloom design, a reproduction of a 1910 book binding, is a reminder of the kind of artistry that could be produced only with these modern machines and techniques.

This design reproduces the cover of The Sensitive Plant and Early Poems, a collection of poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Written in the wake of his child’s death, Shelley’s title poem describes a flower garden going through seasonal changes. First the garden embodies the joy and bliss of spring and summer, and later it becomes consumed by the decay and lethargy of fall and winter. With this poem, Shelley invites the reader to contemplate how the only connection to reality that we have is through fleeting sensations.

Unlike most of our designs, which emulate the front part of a book cover, this Poetry in Bloom design is a recreation of the original’s front “doublure,” the inside face of the cover board. Protected from wear, this part provides bookbinders with additional room for unleashing their creative skills. Here, the binders of Riviere and Son, a London-based binding house, used leather and gilt to create a naturalistic representation of flowers, leaves and butterflies. The sensitive plant, named after its reflex to fold its leaves when touched or shaken, is the focal point of the design’s composition, just as it is in Shelley’s poem.

The book that inspired this Poetry in Bloom series came from the personal library of W.A. Spencer. A wealthy man with a passion for fine books, he bequeathed his massive collection to the New York Public Library after seeing its new, yet-unfinished magnificent central building. Following Spencer’s tragic death as one of the Titanic passengers, the Library received his book collection and a sizable donation for establishing the Spencer Collection. It comes from the Edo period (1615–1868) when Noh theatre, known for the sumptuousness of its costumes, was at its height. Following the success of our first Kara-ori design, released in Fall 2022 with a coral-inspired colour scheme, we are delighted to introduce Kara-ori Pink for Fall 2024 as the latest title in our Japanese Kimono series.

Noh theatre is one of the world’s oldest performing arts and has been handed down through generations of Japanese composers and performers. The plots draw from legend, history and contemporary events and are structured around song and dance. Though the thematic tone is often poetic yet monotonous, the costumes are anything but. In fact, Noh is often referred to as “mask drama” due to the importance placed on masks and costumes within the form.

The term karaori, for which this design is named, refers specifically to the exquisitely embroidered traditional woman’s kimono like the one reproduced here. Karaori are regarded as some of the most beautiful theatrical costumes in the world, thanks in part to the Japanese aristocracy’s embrace of the theatre style – as both viewers and performers.

Though Noh is a Japanese art, karaori means “Chinese weave,” as the fabric has its roots in China. And like the costume reproduced in our Peking Opera Embroidery series, this too would have been crafted for a male performer playing a female role. Both the material itself and the pattern shown would have helped tell the story of the character. In this case, the stiff brocade technique created a thick, glossed fabric that would not drape easily – this was used to create an angular effect evoking the spirit of a noblewoman. The flowering grasses depicted served to emphasize the woman’s femininity.

By the Meiji period (1868–1912) Noh had reached such heights that it was introduced overseas, influencing artists far and wide. William Butler Yeats, for example, wrote an essay on Noh in 1916 that he titled “Certain Noble Plays of Japan.” And even more contemporarily, David Byrne of the Talking Heads discovered Noh while touring Japan and, according to American music critic Josh Kun, was inspired by the highly stylized, stiff costumes to “design the oversize business suit that became a visual staple of Talking Heads live shows.”

Today there are more than 70 Noh theatres throughout Japan and it has been deigned an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. This beautiful example of karaori costuming can be found at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the Otto C. Deering gift. It is our great pleasure to work with such a gorgeous and culturally important piece of history to craft this Paperblanks design.

MORE FEATURES

- Decorative printed paper
- Double-sided designs
- Textured printing
- Rounded edges
- Subtle Paperblanks branding
- 600GSM

Dimensions: 185mm x 40mm x 1mm

Blue Luxe

Luxe Design

Luxuriate in the brass and blue tones of our Blue Luxe cover design. Published in 1818 by English writer Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, it tells the story of the young scientist Victor Frankenstein who creates a living humanoid creature in a boundary-pushing scientific experiment.

It was a fateful 1816 trip through Germany and Switzerland with Shelley’s stepsister, Claire Clairmont, future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron that led to the creation of Frankenstein and his tragic creature. As the story goes, the group travelled along the river Rhine, stopping near Frankenstein Castle where an alchemist was said to have engaged in mysterious experiments two centuries before. Much of the conversation throughout their travels covered topics such as galvanism (related to electric currents) and the occult, and these influences were on Mary Shelley’s mind as they arrived in Geneva. When Byron suggested a competition to see who could write the best ghost story, Shelley drew upon these experiences, as well as her own feelings of grief and guilt over the loss of a child, to craft her tale.

Shelley finished writing in the spring of 1817, and the story was first published in London on January 1, 1818. Though the first edition was published anonymously, it did contain a preface written by her husband and a dedication to her father. Shelley’s name was added to the second edition, published in 1823, and has been inextricably linked to the genre of Gothic horror ever since.

The story tackles universal questions such as “What is my purpose” and “Why am I here” – questions that continue to resonate with reading audiences. In 2019, BBC News listed Frankenstein as one of its 100 Most Influential Novels, and in 2021 it was selected as one of six classic British science fiction novels to be featured on a series of UK postage stamps. The Rebellion saw the capitol’s great theatres burned to the ground, and opera, which had been the main form of entertainment for both urban and rural residents, took a back seat during the ensuing years of political and cultural upheaval.

By the 21st century, there were only 162 identifiable forms of Chinese opera left on the country’s intangible cultural heritage list, down from more than 350 in 1957. Impressionism, which originated in France in the 1860s, is characterized by the artist’s depiction of the visual impression of the moment, specifically the transient effect of light and colour. Monet was particularly fascinated with portraying the beauty of nature as the light, shadows and colours changed with each passing moment, day or season.

Throughout his long career, Monet consistently depicted the landscape and leisure activities of Paris and its environs as well as the coastline of northern France. Raised in Normandy, Monet was introduced to plein-air painting by Eugène Boudin, known for his paintings of the resorts that dotted the region’s Channel coast, and subsequently studied informally with the Dutch landscapist Johan Jongkind (1819–1891). At the age of 22, Monet joined the Paris studio of the academic history painter Charles Gleyre. His classmates included Auguste Renoir, Frédéric Bazille and other future Impressionists.

Among the Impressionists, Monet is perhaps best known for his garden scenes and it was in Giverny, a village on the banks of the Seine River, where he discovered his greatest inspiration. After purchasing property spread across two acres, Monet set about designing an expansive garden according to the contrasts of colour and shadow, as though it were a painting. In his words, he designed his gardens at Giverny “both for the pleasure of the eye and for the purpose of having subjects to paint.”

This garden was where Monet created many of his most famous works, including a series of canvases called Chrysanthemums. She eventually found her place in San Francisco, and as a single mother sought creative ways to provide for her family.

Though not trained in art or jewellery making, Laurel began to put together interesting metal scraps she found in junk yards. Through art she found her solace, her haven, her sense of spiritual restoration.

Laurel’s pictures are filled with imaginative visions, lively colours and living creatures. When she went to China in 1971 to start mass production of the goods she designed, she discovered “cloisonné,” a traditional technique of embellishing metal surfaces with enamel. This became a signature feature of her artistic style.

Many of her paintings remind us of cloisonné enamels with their small, colour-filled compartments. In the United Kingdom during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the impression-making group on the scene was the New Romantics. Members of the movement celebrated unbridled creativity and excessive individuality, contrasting the monotonous, dull look of their urban surroundings. Fashionable club nights became a testing ground where people went to flaunt their provocative new ideas.

The New Romantics were in large part inspired by classic English Romanticism, evolving some of the era’s more indulgent hallmarks to suit the modern music hall and nightclub scenes. Looking to our own history, we decided to do likewise and revamp our own Romantic Sensibility design, which was originally inspired by an 1843 leather binding featuring poetry by the Romantic poet Henry Kirke White. For our Midnight Rebel Bold design, we have replaced the tender colours of that earlier series with a statement-making black. This edgy design is further stripped down by showing off monochromatic embellishments in place of the traditional gold.

The New Romantic movement, whose influence could be seen throughout fashion, design and music, traces its origins to the 1970s nightclub scene of London and Birmingham in the United Kingdom. The popular punk rock of the time had an “against-everything” attitude, but after years of economic recession and a pervasive sense of defeat and hopelessness, that desire for confrontation was replaced with a need to instead escape the drab reality. Organisers of Roxy Music, Duran Duran and David Bowie club nights tapped into this yearning and the New Romantics scene grew from there.

Dressing up in striking outfits and using makeup to muddle gender distinctions, nightclub revelers embraced the flamboyant, the glamorous and the outrageous. Futurism, fetish and fantasy were combined with frilly period fashions of English Romantics, Puritans and French “Incroyables.” These ostentatious displays of sartorial glamour drew the attention of the media, who rushed to come up with names for the image-conscious crowd. “New Romantics” was the moniker that ultimately took hold. And so, it made sense as our series title, as it connected to both our reimagining of our “old” Romantic Sensibilities series and the bold new direction the actual New Romantic movement took.

With their theatrics, the New Romantics defied enough norms to be recognised as the rebels of their day. The notebook is a kind of student diary in which he collected diverse impressions of architecture and decorating, putting forward his ideas on the subject. Included are an analysis of the Christian church and of his ancestral home, as well as a text about ornamentation and comments on the design of a desk. That said, the goings-on in a Georgian-era home provided ample opportunities for inquisitive writers like Austen to study human character and emotions. And so, despite their seemingly limited source of inspiration, Jane Austen’s novels (like Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma) continue to be placed among readers’ all-time favourite book lists because of their superb insights into the dynamics of society and human interaction. Persuasion, the novel featured on this cover, is among her lesser-known works but it benefits from the writer’s more mature outlook as it was composed toward the end of her life.

Born in Hampshire, England, Jane was the second youngest of eight children. According to the custom of the day, her formal education consisted largely of such subjects as needlework, dancing, and music. However, she had access to two large libraries, those of her rector father and a family friend, and her family was always supportive of her intention to succeed as a professional writer. Her novels found readers within her lifetime and she even counted among her admirers George IV, the Prince Regent and eventual King of England!

In most of Austen’s stories we encounter a young female, blessed with natural grace and dignity, yet in danger of compromising herself by yielding to the pressure of social expectations. By contrast, Persuasion, her last novel, centres on a heroine who succumbed to the stifling effects of society and whose perspective on life shows signs of resignation uncharacteristic of Austen’s protagonists. Eventually though, the young woman does come into her own and finds a match with a virtuous man. Thus, there is a conciliatory closing to the story, much the kind that we are accustomed to in Austen’s books.

There is comparatively little information about Austen’s life, as her family sanitized the details of her biography after her passing. However, a large number of her literary manuscripts have survived to this day. The handwritten page reproduced on the cover of our journal is a part of the only known manuscript of Persuasion. It comes from a draft of Chapter 11 that was abandoned in favour of the version that eventually went into print. A tragic play in two parts, Faust reworks the old legend of Doctor Faustus, a magician who sold his soul to the devil. Goethe transformed the tale into a profound exploration of human nature, morality, and destiny. This classic of European literature occupied Goethe for most of his life, from his late teens until just before his death. Although based on a medieval myth, the work draws parallels to modern-day society and humankind’s search for meaning in the world. The legacy of Goethe’s immense life works, and his expression of new ideas, continue to resonate to this day.

Reproduced here is a handwritten dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles from Goethe’s manuscript of Faust, Part II, and on the back cover is an engraving of the two characters by German illustrator and draftsman Julius Nisle. This design celebrates the beloved classic tale of an animated marionette named Pinocchio whose only wish is to be a real boy.

Reproduced here is a manuscript page of Collodi’s original The Adventures of Pinocchio, courtesy of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze in Florence, Italy. The 1883 children’s fantasy novel follows the adventures of the mischievous Pinocchio and his creator and father figure, a poor woodcarver named Geppetto. Since its first publication as a book rather than in serial form, Pinocchio has been one of the most popular pieces of children’s literature and its main character beloved as a universal icon and metaphor of the human condition.

The Adventures of Pinocchio is the world's third most translated book and was the first work of Italian children's literature to achieve international fame. One of its most famous adaptations is the 1940 Disney movie, which is considered to be among the studio’s greatest films.

At its core the tale is one of personal growth. It deals with universal themes that transcend time and place: the nature of good and evil, the struggle to make the right choices, and the consequences of one’s actions. Pinocchio enriches all who encounter its charming story of a boy’s journey to fulfilling his one true wish.
