Embellished Manuscripts

Original art: Handwritten draft of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
Era: from 1967
Region: Colombia

Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist, known affectionately as Gabo or Gabito throughout Latin America. Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Reproduced for this Embellished Manuscript design is a page from his best-known work, One Hundred Years of Solitude. This 1967 novel tells the multi-generational story of the Buendia family, whose patriarch, Jose Arcadio Buendia, founded the fictitious town of Macondo. The story blends magical realism with real-life struggles, exploring themes of love, isolation, fate, and history’s cyclical nature. With exquisite detail and intricately layered symbolism, Marquez has painted a vivid and visceral world that has seen the novel become one of the most important and beloved in the literary canon.

Today, much of the author’s archive is held at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, including this manuscript. We are thrilled to welcome García Márquez to our Embellished Manuscripts Collection and pay tribute to his seminal work with a representation of the lush green jungles of Macondo alongside the manuscript page. On the back cover is a sketch of Márquez drawn by a fan of the writer from our own in-house team of artists. We hope that this iconic imagery and handwritten manuscript will inspire some creative magic in your own life.
